2022 WNFR Pedigree Analysis

The 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge will take place December 1st-10th at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will showcase the top fifteen Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping and bull riding. The WNFR will also feature the top Women’s Professional Rodeo Association contestants in barrel racing and breakaway roping.

Although it is not often mentioned, all the timed-event horses at the WNFR have Thoroughbred ancestry. The most prolific of those ancestors is the stallion Three Bars. He appears multiple times in every pedigree of each horse competing in roping, steer wrestling, and barrel racing. Most of the horses also trace back to Top Deck, Depth Charge, Jackstraw, Spotted Bull and Azure Te. More recent influxes of Thoroughbred blood come from stallions such as Beduino, Raise Your Glass, Reb’s Policy, Master Hand and Leinster House.

Examining the pedigrees of modern Quarter Horses makes the Thoroughbred influence hard to ignore. To illustrate this, The Western Thoroughbred went back eight generations and calculated the Thoroughbred percentage of the horses competing at the WNFR. Here are the winners of the 2022 Nutrena Horse of the Year presented by AQHA awards:

2022 WNFR Barrel Horses

The Thoroughbred ancestry is most significant in the steer wrestling horses but it is very prominent in the barrel horses as well. Of the 50 barrel horses that we analyzed for the 2022 WNFR, the average was 55.7% Thoroughbred in eight generations. The Barrel Racing Horse of the Year, Famous Lil Jet, owned by Jordan and Justin Briggs, is 62.5% Thoroughbred. Dona Kaye Rule’s High Valor, who was second in the Horse of the Year voting, is 74.6% Thoroughbred. Cuatro Fame, owned by Ty and Stevi Hillman, was third in the voting. He is 67.2% Thoroughbred in eight generations.

An eight-generation pedigree for High Valor, one of the barrel horses with highest percentage of Thoroughbred ancestry. All the percentages were calculated based on the number of Thoroughbreds in the eighth generation. The eighth generation consists of 256 individuals. We counted the number of Thoroughbreds in the eighth generation and divided that number by 256. For example, High Valor has 191 Thoroughbreds in his eighth generation. (191 ÷ 256 = 0.746 or 74.6%)

Five of the barrel horses heading to the 2022 WNFR are off the track – Kasons Shadow, Tres Leche, Steal Money, Justaheartbeattofame, and MacGyver Moonflash. They are 71.1%, 69.9%, 69.5%, 60.2%, and 58.6% Thoroughbred respectively. Kasons Shadow, Steal Money, and Macgyver Moonflash are race winners. The horse with the highest percentage of Thoroughbred ancestry is Sissy Winn’s JL I Am Reddy, aka “Ted,” who is 75.4% Thoroughbred in eight generations. Ted is a grandson of Jill Lane‘s Thoroughbred stallion, Red. French Zone, who is ridden by Stevi Hillman, has a Thoroughbred parent. She is out of Ryann Pedone‘s Thoroughbred mare, Star Zone. In all, 19 of the horses that were analyzed had at least one Thoroughbred within three generations. They include One First Class Lady, RV Brijett, MCM Firewater Dixie, TR Judges Doll, Chewingthehotwire, A Dash Ta Flame, Shes Packin Fame, Famous Ladies Man, Force the Goodbye, Blazin Babe Olena, Babe On the Chase, RC Black In Famous, and Prime Diamond.
