2020 WNFR Pedigree Analysis

In 2020, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo returned to Texas for the first time in nearly 60 years. Globe Life Field in Arlington hosted the historic rodeo, which was the first non-baseball event at the park. While there were significant changes, the 2020 WNFR still showcased the season’s top-fifteen money earners in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, and bull riding.

Although it is not frequently discussed, all the timed-event horses at the WNFR have Thoroughbred ancestry. The most prolific of those ancestors is the stallion Three Bars. He appears multiple times in every pedigree of each horse competing in roping, bulldogging, and barrel racing. Most of the horses also trace back to Top Deck, Depth Charge, Jackstraw, Spotted Bull and Azure Te. More recent influxes of Thoroughbred blood come from stallions such as Beduino, Raise Your Glass, Reb’s Policy, Master Hand and Leinster House.

Examining the pedigrees of modern Quarter Horses makes the Thoroughbred influence hard to ignore. To illustrate this point, we went back eight generations and calculated the Thoroughbred percentage of several horses competing at the WNFR. Here are some of the Purina AQHA/PRCA Horses of the Year:
