The 2025 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo will take place December 4th-13th at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will showcase the top fifteen Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping and bull riding. The top contestants of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association will also be competing at the WNFR. However, due to the ongoing EHV-1 outbreak, the breakaway roping has been postponed. The barrel racing will still proceed, but several contestants will be borrowing horses.
This WNFR will look a little different than in years past, but one thing remains constant – all the timed-event horses at the WNFR have Thoroughbred ancestry. The most prolific of those ancestors is the Thoroughbred stallion Three Bars. Most of the horses also trace back to Top Deck, Depth Charge, Jackstraw, Spotted Bull and Azure Te. More recent influxes of Thoroughbred blood come from stallions such as Beduino, Raise Your Glass, Reb’s Policy, Master Hand and Leinster House.
Examining the pedigrees of modern Quarter Horses makes the Thoroughbred influence hard to ignore. To illustrate this, The Western Thoroughbred went back eight generations and calculated the Thoroughbred percentage of the horses competing at the WNFR. Here are the winners of the 2025 Nutrena Horse of the Year awards:
Steer Wrestling – Telle Em PYC – “Banker” – 67.2% Thoroughbred
Banker is owned and ridden by Justin Shaffer. He is also ridden by Tucker Allen, Jesse Brown, Holden Myers and Jace Melvin. Banker is a 2015 gelding bred by Alan Woodbury in Oklahoma. 2025 WNFR Barrel Horses
The Thoroughbred ancestry is most significant in the bulldogging and barrel horses. Of the 67 barrel horses that we analyzed for the 2025 WNFR, the average was 57.6% Thoroughbred in eight generations. The Barrel Racing Horse of the Year, DM Sissy Hayday, aka “Sister,” is 54.3% Thoroughbred. Sister is owned and ridden by Hailey Kinsel. Seis Corona, aka “Jagger,” was second in the Horse of the Year voting. Jagger is owned and ridden by Megan McCleod-Sprague. He is 66.4% Thoroughbred. Third in the voting was Force the Goodbye, aka “Jarvis.” He is owned and ridden by Kassie Mowry. Jarvis is 57.8% Thoroughbred in eight generations.
Four of the barrel horses heading to the 2025 WNFR are off the track – Stoli My Ride, Steal Money, Hesa Mr Moonflash and Tempting Moon Dash. They are 73.8%, 69.5%, 69.1% and 66.0% Thoroughbred respectively. Steal Money is a race winner.
Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi is bringing the horse with highest percentage Thoroughbred – JL Roc Lost a Sock, aka “Mo.” He is 81.3% Thoroughbred in eight generations. Mo is an eight-year-old gelding bred by Jill Lane Quarter Horses in Montana. He is by JL Sirocco and out of Reddy to Rebound, a Thoroughbred mare that placed in the 1D at the CSR Futurity and Fizz Bomb Futurity. Hayle Gibson-Stillwell will also be riding a horse out of a 1D money-earning Thoroughbred mare. Her main mount, Buncha Dinero, aka “Piper,” is by PC Frenchmans Hayday and out of Rambunchkie, a Thoroughbred mare that won four races and earned $24,960 on the track before beginning her successful barrel racing career.
Impressively, 29 of the horses that we analyzed had at least one Thoroughbred within three generations. Adios Pantalones, AM Regina George, Awesome Arlo, Babe on the Prowl, BCK Spyder Monkey, Blazing With My Dude, Blingolena, Chitichiti Bangbang, Dash of Blue Sky, Famous Ladies Man, Hanksnthefastlane, Hesa Mr Moonflash, Jets Top Gun, Kissin Goodby, KN Fames Best Yet, Prime Diamond, RC Black In Famous, RDC Dancingtothelead, SGL Rico, Sir Epic, Smiling N Ta Fame, Stoli My Ride, Ticket Ta Heaven, TR Judges Doll, Vanilla Gorilla and Watch the Freak Fly all have Thoroughbreds on their AQHA papers.
Overall, the WNFR barrel horses are more Thoroughbred than Quarter Horse. So, when you watch them run down the alley at the Thomas & Mack, remember that you are witnessing a culmination of centuries of breeding that not only includes legends such as Wimpy, Driftwood and King, but also Bold Ruler, Northern Dancer and Man O’ War.
Note: Anita Ellis was forced to turn out due to injury, but we still included her horses in our calculations. We are also aware that several barrel racing contestants will be forced to borrow horses. We will be continuously updating this list and out calculations to keep this information accurate.
