Oldie was foaled on April 13th, 1961 in California. He was bred by J. Rukin Jelks, the founder of Rillito Downs in Tucson, Arizona. Old Pueblo, the sire of Oldie, was by Windy City II and out of Shadows Fall, by Ariel. He won ten races, including the California Breeders’ Trail Stakes, Del Mar Futurity, Debonair Stakes, San Vicente Handicap and California Breeders’ Champion Stakes. Old Pueblo sired many Quarter Horses including stakes winners Miss Pajamas, Pueblo High and Shawnee Hoo, as well as performance ROM-earners Apache Pueblo, Pueblos Payday and Sunday Times. His Thoroughbred sons Chinle, Fashion Center, Sporting Tiger, Unojo, Wee Folk, Windy Pueblo and Winged Pueblo also sired Quarter Horses, Paints and Appaloosas.

Miss Todd, the dam of Oldie, was by multiple stakes winner Your Host and out of Rosella, by War Relic. Miss Todd won eleven races including the Del Mar Debutante Stakes, Junior League Stakes, Hollywood Lassie Stakes and Las Flores Handicap. She also equaled the track record for five furlongs in the Cinderella Stakes at Hollywood Park. After she retired from racing, Miss Todd produced six Thoroughbred foals for Jelks. Her most successful starter, Page, was a full-brother to Oldie. Page won thirteen starts and twice set the track record for six furlongs at Santa Anita. Page went on to sire 87 AQHA recognized foals, including stakes winners Im Jo Page and Request a Page. Winkleman, another full-brother to Oldie, sired a handful of Quarter Horses, as did his half-brother, Mazatl. Every one of Miss Todd’s four sons sired Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses.

As a two-year-old, Oldie made fourteen starts and won four races. He placed second in the 1963 Del Mar Futurity. Oldie also placed third in the Golden Gate Freshman Handicap and Haggin Stakes. At three, he placed third in the Debonair Stakes. He failed to hit the board in the six starts that he made as a four-year-old. By 1966, Oldie was owned by Judd Morse. He took a year off to cover mares at Morse’s Future Farms in Lakeview, California, but retuned the races at age six to pick up one more win. His final race record was 43 starts, five wins, seven seconds and three thirds, with $53,292 in earnings, which is the equivalent of about $510,000 today.

Oldie’s first foal crop included Hanalei, a sorrel Quarter Horse mare out of a daughter of Camelot’slittlecuero. Hanalei placed second in the 1970 California State Exposition Championship. She earned a Register of Merit and a Superior Race Horse award. Hanalei went on to produce Kingdom by the Sea, winner of the 1976 Raton Futurity. She also produced racing ROM-earners Autumn Lee, Hanaleis Frolic, Big Bongo Bucks and Ascendancy.
In 1972, Chou Chou became Oldie’s first stakes winner when she claimed the Pacific Coast QHRA at Fresno. Chou Chou went on to produce Jet Force, winner of the 1980 Laddie Handicap and Vandy’s Flash Handicap. She also produced Superior Race Horse Petit Chou and Racing ROM-earners Choubo and Galaxina.

Black Sable, the best Quarter Horse starter by Oldie, was foaled in 1976. She was a black mare out of Ladywinsmore, by Tiny Charger. Black Sable won the 1979 Rainbow Derby and placed third in the Champion of Champions. She was named the 1979 AQHA Racing Champion Three-Year-Old Filly. In total, Black Sable won five races and earned $271,592 on the track. She went on to produce Sables Secret, winner of the Gr. 1 Dash For Cash Futurity and Gr. 1 La Primera Del Ano Derby. Black Sable also produced Sables Defender, winner of the Gr. 3 War Chic Handicap, as well as stakes placed Sables Select and racing ROM-earners Weavers Trade, Blazin Sable, Captain Sutter, Jazzing Sable, Sables Serenade and Sables Vision. Notably, her daughter Sables Charger produced Uncas, the 1996 Champion Two-Year-Old Gelding.

After Black Sable, Oldie’s next best Quarter Horse starter was Soul of an Oldie, winner of the 1985 Pacific Coast QHRA Derby. His best Thoroughbred starters were Taketimefortears and Diego Bay. In total, Oldie sired 187 Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse foals in 18 foal crops. They included 50 race winners, 43 ROM-earners, 11 stakes finalists, three stakes winners, two Superior Race Award earners and one champion. Collectively, they earned $660,457 on the track.
Quarter Horses by Oldie also earned 202.0 points in the arena. Della Go Go, a sorrel mare by Oldie and out of Leedella, by Leo Bar, earned most of those points. She placed seventh in Senior Western Riding at the 1979 AQHA World Show. She also placed sixth in Hunter Under Saddle with a youth exhibitor. During her show career, Della Go Go earned 141.0 performance points and ROMs in the Open and Youth divisions. Judd’s Folly and El Viejo Amor, geldings by Oldie, also earned performance ROMs. Miss Risque, Pink Darling, Shana, Oldie’s Mink, Big M Oldie Wunder, Twist of Lime and Surely Its Me earned performance points.

Daughters of Oldie produced 335 Quarter Horse foals that earned $1,564,124 on the track and 172.5 points in the arena. Sables Defender and Sables Secret, the highest earning daughters of Black Sable, were the highest earners out of any Oldie mares. The next highest earner was Jetliner Joe, a sorrel gelding by A Zure Request and out of Joldie, by Oldie. Jetliner Joe won Endurance Handicap, Pap Handicap, Hillsdale Handicap and Table Tennis Handicap. He earned $137,298 on the track. Other stakes winners out of Oldie mares included Shes Tidy Too, Rich Legacy and Nuencounter. Best Value, Ladera Girl, Wanna Skip Me and Refreshmint were among his grandget that earned performance ROMs.
Oldie’s last foals were born in 1989, when he would have been 28 years old. His descendants standing at stud today include Ruby Buckle stallion Mr Soul and Sables Dashing Guy.
