Red was foaled on April 4th, 1994. He was bred by Thomas W. Bachman at Pegasus Ranch in Petaluma, California. Red was by Siyah Kalem, a graded stakes placed chestnut stallion by Mr. Prospector and out of Lady Graustark, by Graustark. Siyah Kalem sired stakes winners Both Ways, J J Wantsthefront and Taurus Forus. Satan’s Pride, the dam of Red, was by Crimson Satan and out of Autumn Pride, by Kentucky Pride. She won fifteen starts including the Michigan Futurity, Azalea Stakes and Mahmoudess Stakes. Satan’s Pride went on to produce twelve foals including graded stakes winner Devil’s Bride and stakes winner Rahbaby. Red was her winningest foal.

In 1995, Red was purchased by Jack L. Finely for $26,000 at the CTS Del Mar Summer Invitational Yearling Sale. Finely would own the chestnut stallion for the entirety of his racing career. Red made his first start on April 22nd, 1996, at Turf Paradise. Two months later, he won a Maiden Special Weight at Hollywood Park for trainer Henry Moreno and jockey Rene Douglas. His next start was in the Haggin Stakes where he finished fourth behind Swiss Yodeler, the top two-year-old of the 1996 Hollywood Park spring and summer meet. Red ran second to Swiss Yodeler in the Gr. 2 Hollywood Juvenile Championship Stakes. Moreno shipped Red to Del Mar where, away from Swiss Yodeler, he won the $100,000 Graduation Stakes by two and a half lengths. At the end of August, Swiss Yodeler would outrun Red again in the Gr. 3 Best Pal Stakes. In the Gr. 2 Del Mar Futurity, both chestnut stallions finished behind eventual Kentucky Derby winner, Silver Charm. Red ended his two-year-old season with a five and a half length win in the California Sires Stakes at Santa Anita.

After a short layoff, the two-time stakes winner ran fourth in the San Miguel Stakes and the Gr. 3 San Vincente Stakes. After finishing sixth in the Gr. 3 Baldwin Stakes, Red got his third stakes win in the Zany Tactics Stakes under jockey Julio Garcia. He then shipped to Calder Race Course in Miami, Florida where he ran second in the Carry Back Stakes. The trip across the country and back may have taken a toll on Red. He did not find the winner’s circle again until October when Corey Nakatani jockeyed him to a two and a half length victory in the California Cup Sprint Handicap. As a four-year-old, Red ran second in the Gr. 2 Palos Verdes Handicap, finally outrunning his old rival Swiss Yodeler. He also ran second in the Reb’s Policy Handicap and third in the El Conejo Handicap. He retired with a race record of 24 starts, five wins, six seconds, two thirds, and $469,399 in earnings.

Blane Schvaneveldt, an AQHA Hall of Fame trainer and breeder, had followed Red throughout his racing career. Schvaneveldt thought the stallion’s speed and correct conformation would cross well on Quarter Horse mares. The Hall of Famer purchased Red to stand at his ranch in Romoland, California alongside Quarter Horse heavyweights Chicks Beduino and Dashin Bye. Schvaneveldt’s support resulted in the stallion booking high-quality mares immediately. His first foal crop included Brishane (TB), winner of the Gr. 3 Catalina Derby, and Getmeoutofthered (QH), winner of the All Canadian Derby.

Red’s best Quarter Horse starter, Canosa, was foaled in 2003. Canosa was a gray gelding out of Just Mairi, by Mr Eye Opener. He won the Gr. 1 AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship, Gr. 3 Northwest Juvenile Championship and Gr. 3 West/Southwest Derby Challenge. Canosa earned a Superior Race Horse award for his accomplishments on the track. Other Quarter Horse stakes winners by Red included Fast Red Leggs and Weber. In total, his Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse offspring won 542 races and earned $4,756,546 on the track.
While his get were winning races, they were also earning accolades in the arena. In 2004, Christina Richman purchased Xtrared, a chestnut mare by Red and out of Attract, by Twaynas Dash, for $2,700 at a Schvaneveldt sale. Xtrared, affectionately known as “Stitch,” was too small to cut it as a racehorse. Instead, Christina trained her for barrel racing. Stitch became a three-time National Finals Rodeo Qualifier, four-time RAM National Circuit Finalist, and earned $473,235 in barrel racing. Amared, A Red Streak, Cut No Slack, Red N Away, Red Can Dash, Zndots, and other early foals by Red also earned money in barrel racing despite being bred to run on the racetrack. Weber, the aforementioned stakes winner, also became a barrel racing money earner after he retired from racing.

In October of 2007, Red was purchased by Jill Lane to stand at her ranch in Fort Benton, Montana. Lane had met Schvaneveldt shortly after Red left the track. She was impressed by his strong back, big hip, sloping shoulder, and perfect neck. She also thought that he had a pretty head and an intelligent presence. Lane became good friends with Schvaneveldt and purchased a few horses from him over the years. She followed Red’s stud career closely and was excited by the opportunity to own him. The following spring, Lane began crossing Red on daughters of Dash Ta Fame, Dr Nick Bar, Fire Water Flit and other top barrel racing sires. Her breeding decisions boosted Red’s progeny earnings to nearly $1 million in the barrel pen. Some of his top performers include JL Antares, JL Cherry Coke, JL Danika, JL Reddy to Fire, JL Red Cupid and JL Redwood.
In 2011, a Thoroughbred mare named C C Bound was hauled from Alberta to Montana to meet Red. The resulting foal, Reddy to Rebound, became one of the most successful Thoroughbred barrel horses of all time. Reddy to Rebound placed in the 1D Average at the Copper Springs Ranch Futurity and finished in the top ten in a go-round at The Fizz Bomb Futurity. She was later retired from barrel racing to become a broodmare. In 2022, Reddy to Rebound’s second foal, JL Roc Lost A Sock, aka “Mo,” was the second highest barrel racing money earner according to Equistat. JL Roc Lost A Sock earned $402,613 in a single year! Reddy to Rebound’s third foal, JL Getmeoutofthered placed in the 1D at the Sand Cup. Her younger foal, JL Bet On Red, is just starting to compete.

Reddy to Rebound is not the only Red mare that is producing top performers. Rubiate, a sorrel mare by Red, produced Kobe, winner of the Gr. 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby. Rubiate is also the dam of ROM-earners Abby Cadabby, El Cholillo and Rubia Woman. Other stakes winners out of Red mares include Dashin BK and Hydrostatic. In total, daughters of Red have produced winners of $855,389 on the track. His grandget have also earned thousands in the barrel pen. Some of those money earners include JL Ariana, JL Chanel, JL Roc Paperscissors, MJ Pit Stop Lane, Shes Xtra Cinnful and The Red Beer Is Xtra.

Red’s last foals were born in 2014. Since 2016, Lane has been crossing mares to one of his youngest sons, JL Reddy to Charm. The gray stallion has over $35,000 in barrel racing earnings and has already sired earners of over $200,000 in the barrel pen. JL Reddy to Charm is one of many talented horses carrying on Red’s unique legacy. We may never see another like Red.
